WHAT IS HEAT STRESS?

Heat stress occurs when the body overheats from external or internal sources. The body uses breathing, sweating and blood flow to regulate heat, but it can still lead to heat-related illnesses. Heat exhaustion, cramps, fainting and heat stroke are possible. Working in hot conditions can lower productivity and harm workers’ health. Preventing heat stress protects workers’ safety, health and productivity. Trust OccuNomix to make that simple for you.

HIGH RISK INDUSTRIES

Many occupations require workers to be exposed to environments of high heat. Unfortunately, “every year thousands of workers become sick from occupational heat exposure, and some are fatally injured (osha.gov)”.

  • Construction
  • Road Work
  • Demolition
  • Iron/Steel Work
  • Oil Rigging
  • Drilling/Mining
  • Roofing

HEAT-RELATED ILLNESSES

  • HEAT RASH: Red Clusters of pimples or small blisters
  • HEAT CRAMPS: Muscle Cramps, pain, or spasms in the abdomen, arms or legs
  • HEAT EXHAUSTION: Headache, heavy sweating, extreme weakness and fatigue, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, irritability, fast, shallow breathing and rapid heartbeat, slightly elevated body temperature
  • HEAT STROKE: Confusion, seizures, coma, high body temperature, hot, dry skin or profuse sweating, throbbing headache

Heat Stroke is the most serious heat related health problem and happens when the body’s temperature regulation system fails, forcing the body temperature to rise to critical levels. This can lead to disability or death.

PREVENTION TIPS

  • Most Important; drink plenty of fluids (8 oz every 15-20 minutes during moderate activity in moderate heat)
  • Acclimatize workers
  • Set up a buddy system
  • Schedule regular rest breaks
  • Emphasize the need for appropriate clothing/PPE
  • Avoid beverages that contain alcohol, soda, caffeine or other diuretics
  • Wear loose-fitting, lightweight, light-colored clothing
  • Wear headgear that provides shade
  • Take 10-15 minute breaks every 2 hours
  • Use personal cooling devices, such as cooling vests and or accessories

PROTECTING YOU

There’s now a new ANSI/ISEA heat management standard A10.50, which establishes the minimum requirements for the prevention of heat illnesses and management of heat stress hazards encountered during construction and demolition operations. Choosing the right PPE for your needs is important for staying cool while you work in dangerously warm environments.

DON’T THROW SHADE,WEAR IT!

Ever been labelled the worksite grouch during summer’s sizzling days? Feeling prickly when the sun turns up the heat is more common than you’d think! The struggle is real when the sun decides to turn the world into its personal oven. But, hey, it’s not just about escaping the sweaty discomfort, it’s about playing a long-term game called ‘dodge the sunburn’. Don your sun-armor, folks, because keeping your cool when the mercury rises is more than just about comfort - it’s about your long-term health!

The American Cancer Society reveals that over 3 million people are diagnosed with skin cancer every year. A significant contributor to this is exposure to UV radiation, which is implicated in about 65% of melanoma cases and 90% of non melanoma skin cancers, according to the National Library of Medicine.

So, as you gear up for work in the sun, remember to prioritize shade and UV protection. It’s more than just comfort, it’s a matter of health and safety.
